Annotation

“Own - Alien” opposition lies at the heart of any intercultural communications. It becomes a rather complicated chain of interrelated concepts “Own - Different - Alien - Enemy - Monster” wherein the choice of communicant's image depends on many curcumstances. Notion stereotypes about foreign cultures play by no means important role in this process. They may show the range of images “Own - Monster” under certain circumstances wherein the Monster is a quintessence of a negative attitude towards the Alien. The Monster, represented in zoomorphic images, сarries out our fears. The objective of this article is a determining of stereotyped images about Russia wherein the Alien image changes into its extreme form - the Monster. The main method of research is phenomenological analysis. We used the most common, vivid and meaningful forms of monstrous images about Russia. They are an octopus and a bear. These images show the attitude towards our country as an unpredictable, that is able to hug to death, unstable, irrational, thus, dangerous one.
