Annotation

The article is devoted to the analysis of little-known facts of the first scientific expeditions of Russia in the Caspian Sea in terms of the role Astrakhan played in them. The author outlines the main reasons that prompted Russia to hold such events and carefully analyzes the preparation, progress and results of the most important studies of the Caspian Sea during the 18th century. As a result, there is a clear relationship between the political strategy of the Russian state to expand its influence in the Caspian region and its research study.
